Arthritis is one of the most common ailments seen in middle-aged to older pets, but even younger dogs and cats, can suffer from arthritic changes.

There are six main types of canine and feline arthritis which the AEP Pet Tag is intended to address:

Osteoarthritis: by far the most prevalent form of arthritis a progressive, debilitating disorder usually seen in older dogs and cats.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: caused by an over reaction of the immune system.
Infective Arthritis: caused by a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection in the joint.
Idiopathic Arthritis: occurs along with other disease problems.
Polyarthritis: usually drug-induced.
Acute Traumatic Arthritis: caused by an injury or Trauma.

Signs of arthritis in dogs and cats.
You may notice your pet limping or notice them favoring one or more of their legs. They may become reluctant to do things they once enjoyed, such as jumping into the car or on the couch.

Arthritis in cats can be particularly hard to spot; they may be less playful and stop jumping onto windowsills, and other high areas because of the pain and discomfort. They may spend more time sleeping; only moving to eat or go to the litter box, or even not going to the litter box. Cats have many ways to get our attention!

Arthritic changes can occur not only in the joints but also in the various areas of the spine, and the pet may seem lethargic and reluctant to move. Arthritic animals may become irritable, and prone to growling and biting if they are handled in a way that increases their pain.

Pets affected with arthritis may also resort to licking or, chewing on the areas that are painful; causing inflamed skin and hair loss over affected areas.
